What Olivir™ Is
The olive tree has been cultivated around the Mediterranean for more than 6,000 years, valued not only for its fruit and oil but for its leaves, which carry a distinctive phenolic profile that the fruit and oil do not. Olivir™ is a concentrated extract of those leaves, standardized to a defined oleuropein content. Beyond oleuropein, the extract carries a complementary phenolic profile including hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, oleacein, and related secoiridoids — compounds that occur uniquely in plants of the Oleaceae family.
Why Olive Leaf
Olive leaf has the strongest evidence base of any traditional Mediterranean botanical when it comes to cardiovascular markers. The extract is well-studied for its effects on blood pressure markers in pre-hypertensive populations, and its phenolic compounds are documented in the published literature for their antioxidant, vascular, and anti-inflammatory activity. A 6-week randomized controlled trial of olive leaf extract delivering 136 mg oleuropein and 6 mg hydroxytyrosol per day in pre-hypertensive males produced significant reductions in cardiovascular markers compared with placebo. Subsequent and larger studies have continued to build that evidence.
Mechanism
Oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol — the two most-studied compounds in olive leaf — are potent antioxidants in vitro and have documented activity at multiple cardiovascular and metabolic targets in published research. Proposed mechanisms include angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition, modulation of endothelial nitric oxide signaling, reduction of LDL oxidation, and direct antioxidant scavenging of reactive oxygen species. The extract’s effects on the cardiovascular system appear to be the sum of multiple complementary mechanisms rather than a single pathway.
