What SerraSure™ Is
Serratiopeptidase is a metalloprotease enzyme of approximately 45–60 kDa with a zinc atom at its active site, belonging to the serralysin family (peptidase M10B). The enzyme was first isolated from bacteria found in the silkworm (Bombyx mori) intestine — where it enabled the emerging moth to dissolve its cocoon — and is now produced commercially by purification from culture of Serratia species under controlled fermentation. SerraSure™ is supplied as a finished enzyme powder standardized to a defined activity level.
Why 2,200 U/mg
Serratiopeptidase is sold to formulators at a wide range of activities, typically expressed in units per milligram (U/mg). Higher specific activity allows formulators to deliver a target activity at lower mg-per-dose, which simplifies capsule and tablet design and reduces excipient burden. SerraSure™ at 2,200 U/mg sits in the high-activity range commonly specified by experienced systemic-enzyme brands. Lower activity grades are available on request.
Mechanism
Serratiopeptidase is a proteolytic enzyme — it cleaves peptide bonds in proteins. In oral systemic-enzyme applications, it has been studied for its activity on fibrin-related proteins, its interaction with bradykinin and histamine pathways, and its capacity to hydrolyze proteinaceous debris associated with inflammatory exudates. Because the enzyme is acid-sensitive, oral SerraSure™ is generally formulated with enteric coating to enable delivery past gastric acid.
Why Formulators Choose SerraSure™
- High specific activity (2,200 U/mg) enables compact dose forms.
- Stable powder suited for enteric-coated tablets and DRcaps®-style capsules.
- Supplied through GCI’s long-standing fermentation-source network.
- Request the current activity assay and lot-specific certificate of analysis.
Where SerraSure™ Fits
Dosage formats: enteric-coated tablets, enteric-coated capsules (DRcaps® or equivalent), softgels with enteric protection.
Industries served: dietary supplements, sports nutrition.
