What PQQSure™ Is
PQQ is a small, water-soluble, redox-active quinone first identified in the 1960s as a cofactor for bacterial dehydrogenases. It occurs naturally in trace amounts in fermented soy (natto), parsley, kiwi, green peppers, cocoa, and human breast milk. PQQSure™ is supplied as the disodium salt (PQQ•Na₂), the stable, water-soluble form used in commercial dietary supplements globally.
Regulatory Status
PQQ disodium salt was approved as a Novel Food ingredient in the European Union in 2018 following a positive evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority. In the United States, PQQ has been marketed as a dietary ingredient since 2008.
Mechanism
PQQ is most commonly described in the literature as a mitochondrial biogenesis-supporting compound. It activates PGC-1α (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha), the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, and influences related transcriptional networks including SIRT1 and AMPK. PQQ is also a potent redox-active antioxidant, capable of cycling through more oxidation-reduction cycles than ascorbate and effective at neutralizing superoxide and hydroxyl radicals associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.
Why Formulators Choose PQQSure™
