Description
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid found throughout the body, and is most abundant in the brain, eyes and heart. It is a major structural fat in both the brain and retina. Numerous studies confirm that everyone, from infants to adults, benefits from an adequate supply of DHA. Most people have some DHA in their diet, but the average American’s diet is low in this nutrient. Low levels have been correlated with memory loss, mood swings and other mental and visual conditions. DHA can be obtained from fatty fish, such as salmon, or from microalgae. One difference between the DHA from these two sources is that the DHA from algae is vegetarian and DHA from fish is not vegetarian. Vegetarians usually rely on consumption of plants such as flaxseed, walnuts and soybeans for their omega-3 fatty acids (including DHA). However, these plants do not contain DHA; instead, they contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which must go through an extensive process in the body to be converted into DHA. In many cases, very little ALA is eventually converted into DHA, which means many vegetarians are not getting their daily requirement of DHA.
