Description

Agnus Castus, also known as chasteberry, is a flowering shrub that produces brown berries, native to Mediterranean Europe. Dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, the berries have been used for reproductive health purposes. The name “chaste” berry is said to have come from the mistaken belief that consuming the fruit reduces sexual desire or promotes chastity. More recently, extracts from the berry have been well studied for their ability to relieve discomforts associated with the menstrual cycle. The herb influences hormonal activity by stimulating the pituitary gland at the base of the brain to produce more luteinizing hormone (LH). This, in turn, signals the ovaries to produce more of the hormone progesterone. Chasteberry also acts to lower elevated levels of a second pituitary hormone, prolactin, which is involved in breast-milk production.* The berry contains natural plant compounds, including Agnuside. GCI’s Agnus Castus powder extract is standardized to 0.5% Agnuside.
